Cellular Functions and Properties

Cellular Functions and Properties

Instructor:

Focus:

My general goal in identifying these articles was to find concepts or context to engage students. Will use the articles and methods of CREATE to cover content while discussing the papers. There is no obvious connection between papers. Original articles are provided for instructor prep or potential use in an upper level course.

Overview:

Applicable for Courses:

Molecular and Cellular Biology

Educational Level:

Introductory Level

Roadmap Objectives:

    • Article: Basilisk lizard walking on water - Video How “Jesus Lizards” Walk on Water - Popular Article Running on water: Three-dimensional force generation by basilisk lizards, S. Tonia Hsieh and George V. Lauder, PNAS, 2004 – Scientific Article Three-dimensional hind limb kinematics of water running in the plumed basilisk lizard (Basiliscus plumifrons), S. Tonia Hsieh, J Exp Bio, 2003 – Scientific Article
    • Content area/major concepts: Engages students with the unique biology of the basilisk lizard. Confronted with unusual outcome and forced to figure out what is occurring and how to test.

Scientific curiosity, scientific method, molecule properties, hydrogen bonding
    • Methods or technology used to obtain data: Observation, video photography
    • How the CREATE strategy was used:
    • Biggest teaching challenge: minimal unless using scientific articles. If using scientific articles, complex modeling and camera data acquisition come into play. Suggest only using Video or Popular Article and remainder is for support.
    • Article: New Light Shed On Early Stage Alzheimer's Disease – Popular Article Modulation of the endoplasmic reticulum–mitochondria interface in Alzheimer’s disease and related models, Hedskog et al, PNAS, 2013 – Scientific Article Supplemental Material - article
    • Content area/major concepts: Engages students with a known disease and one that shows how organelles work together in a functional way.

cellular organelles, Alzheimer disease, cell junctions
    • Methods or technology used to obtain data: EM, Confocal, fractionation, western blot, cell culture, siRNA knockdown, in situ, ELISA
    • How the CREATE strategy was used:
    • Biggest teaching challenge: minimal unless using scientific articles. Scientific article contains a large amount of techniques that would need to be discussed in detail for understanding. Suggest only popular article and use remainder for support.
    • Article: Stem Cell Marker Regulates Synapse Formation – Popular Article Nestin negatively regulates postsynaptic differentiation of the neuromuscular synapse, Yang et al, Nature Neuroscience, 2011 – Scientific Article
    • Content area/major concepts: Protein without known function is used as stem cell marker. Identity of function is now known and involved regulation of neuromuscular synapse.

cell synapses, scientists do not understand everything and it can still be useful
    • Methods or technology used to obtain data: Microscopy, cell culture, western blot
    • How the CREATE strategy was used:
    • Biggest teaching challenge: minimal unless using scientific articles. Scientific article contains a large amount of techniques that would need to be discussed in detail for understanding. Suggest only popular article and use remainder for support.
    • Article: Cell Shape Changes During Mitosis – Popular Article SCFFbxw5 mediates transient degradation of actin remodeller Eps8 to allow proper mitotic progression, Werner et al, Nature Cell Biology, 2013 – Scientific Article
    • Content area/major concepts: Integrates actin cytoskeleton into process of mitosis

      actin cytoskeleton, mitosis
    • Methods or technology used to obtain data: Microscopy, siRNA knockdown, western blot, cell culture
